Hiroshige. 100 views of famous places in Edo

Sale price€29,90

In 1855 a terrible earthquake devastated the city of Edo (later renamed Tokyo): in the following decade Hiroshige (1797-1858) began drawing the hundred faces of his hometown. If on the one hand he records the changes in the city, on the other he projects his dreams there, pervaded by nostalgia. The famous landscape painter shows with great lyricism the most famous sites and, sometimes, their recent reconstruction, but also testifies with extreme precision the daily life of the inhabitants and their customs. Although the format of ukiyo-e landscapes is traditionally horizontal, in this collection - the last one published while he was alive - Hiroshige boldly chooses verticality, playing with close-ups and original shots, with the art of the great master of printmaking that he is . Reproduced in facsimile with Japanese binding, the work is presented in an elegant box which includes a small catalog raisonné.
