IRO - The essence of color in Japanese design

Sale price€39,90

The origins of Japan's traditional colors are lost in antiquity. From cherry blossom to sooty bamboo, from green pine needles to the vast range of brown teas, their names evoke the fascination that nature and the changing seasons have always had on Japanese sensibilities. Initially adopted in clothing to indicate rank, traditional colors have seen their meanings expand over time to now include all manner of design objects.

This volume celebrates a selection of 200 colors (iro, in Japanese), each exemplified by one or more objects ranging from 16th century kimonos to contemporary seating, from kitchen utensils to the most refined ceramics. Alongside creators such as Naoto Fukasawa, Issey Miyake and Reiko Sudo we find lesser-known or completely unknown talents who have given shape to a peculiar and lasting tradition of Japanese design, between ancestral artisan techniques and cutting-edge technologies. Each color is contextualised by a short descriptive text on its origins and the influence it has exerted in various fields, with information on the pigments from which the precious dyes were obtained (such as the omnipresent indigo blue), or on the historical figures who made some shades are popular, such as the tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyū. Written by Rossella Menegazzo, former co-author of WA - The essence of Japanese design , the precious volume is in itself a magnificent object that will conquer all design lovers.
