Yokai in ukiyoe masterpieces

Sale price€24,90

Japanese folklore is a veritable gold mine of terrifying supernatural figures. Many ukiyoe prints from the Edo period (1603-1868) depict these monstrous beings that populate legends, folktales, and horror stories.

The volume contains 70 yūrei (apparitions), oni (demons), kaijin (humanoid monsters) and yōkai in the strict sense (ghosts and demonic creatures) vibrantly described in 120 works of art by great masters such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. It is a rich repertoire of images passed down for generations: many of Japan's current artistic genres, such as manga and video games, draw inspiration from these prints.
