What are "SHIMENAWA" and "SHIMEKAZARI"?
Japanese straw works have ancient origins, dating back to the Jomon period, approximately 5000 years ago. The Shimenawa also appears in Japanese mythology, symbolizing the birth of Japan and representing Japan's oldest traditional culture, woven into history. It also has deep connections with Japanese Shinto, becoming part of Japanese identity.

Many shimenawa and shimekazari are made of rice straw. Rice straw is considered the grass where the gods reside, and traditional auspicious objects are also made of rice straw, becoming indispensable to the Japanese people.

The shimenawa serves as a boundary separating the divine realm from the human world, preventing impurities from entering. Its origin dates back to Japanese mythology, where Amaterasu, the sun goddess, is said to have sealed the entrance to the celestial rock cave with a shimenawa to prevent her return, giving the "shime" the meaning of space occupied by the gods.

It refers to shimenawa adorned with auspicious ornaments. Originally, it began as a way to indicate that one's home was a suitable sacred place to welcome the Toshigami (New Year deity), similar to how shrines decorate with shimenawa.

In Japan there is a belief that "left is sacred, right is secular." This belief is reflected in straw works, where shimenawa and shimekazari used in religious ceremonies are made with "left-hand braiding", while those used in daily life are made with "right-hand braiding", distinguishing between the divine and the earthly.

We look forward to welcoming you to TENOHA MILANO for this extraordinary event!
