The snow
After The Cherry Blossoms, The Seasons, The Birds and The Water, the new small-format box set of the ukiyo-e series unfolds around a hundred leporello images in the classic Japanese guise. With the arrival of winter, Japan turns white and sounds become muffled. The whiteness of the snow has always fascinated the masters of printmaking, and artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, Shotei and Kawase have expertly rendered the poetry of the cold season. In the over 60 images of the box set, the peak of Mount Fuji, the solitary pagodas of the temples, the travelers along the Tōkaidō compose with the elements of nature a hymn to the purity of the snowy world, inviting us to enjoy the fleeting moment of the present according to the dictates of the floating world.
